A BIT ABOUT SIBEL HEALTH:

With headquarters based in Chicago, IL and an international office in Seoul, South Korea, Sibel Health is an award-winning digital health startup with a mission to deliver Better Health Data for All®. We were founded out of a Northwestern University Biotechnology lab, with a specific focus on our most vulnerable patients - pregnant persons and babies - where we believe wireless monitoring has the potential to do the most good worldwide. We are seeking mission-driven individuals with a strong sense of purpose who believe that technology can improve the lives of our most vulnerable patients.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We are hiring a Senior Accountant to own the day-to-day accounting operations behind a hardware company with a real supply chain, real inventory, and real regulatory obligations. You will drive the monthly close, own inventory and cost accounting in NetSuite, and produce the reporting and metrics that leadership, the board, our auditors, and our grant funders rely on.

This role suits someone who wants more scope than a Senior Accountant seat at a large company would offer. You will work directly with the Director of Finance and cross-functionally with Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, and Program Management. The work is a mix of getting the numbers right and building the processes that keep them right as we scale.

WHAT YOU WILL BE WORKING ON:

Month-End Close and General Ledger

  • Own significant portions of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and other balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Drive the close calendar and checklist - tracking owners, dependencies, and cycle time, with a goal of shortening close without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Maintain a clean, well-documented general ledger and chart of accounts, including expense classification by business line to support segment-level reporting.
  • Prepare and review intercompany transactions and eliminations, including activity with our international subsidiary.

Inventory and Cost Accounting

  • Own inventory accounting end to end: standard costs, purchase price variance, work-in-process, finished goods, scrap, and excess and obsolescence reserves.
  • Partner with Operations and Supply Chain on cycle counts, physical inventory, and reconciliation of system quantities to what is actually on the floor and at contract manufacturers.
  • Maintain and periodically refresh standard cost rolls; analyze and explain manufacturing variances.
  • Account for consigned, demo, loaner, and field inventory, including units deployed at clinical sites and in study programs.
  • Track and report on COGS and gross margin by product and business line, and flag the drivers behind period-over-period movement.

Reporting, Metrics, and KPIs

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and the supporting schedules and variance analysis that go with them.
  • Build and maintain recurring management reporting: revenue and margin by business line, inventory turns, days on hand, burn and runway inputs, and spend against budget.
  • Develop KPI reporting that operating leaders will actually use, and automate it where possible rather than rebuilding it by hand each month.
  • Support board and investor reporting packages, and respond to ad hoc analysis requests with clear, well-sourced answers.

NetSuite and Systems

  • Serve as a power user and functional owner of NetSuite for accounting: saved searches, reports, item and costing setup, approval workflows, and period close.
  • Identify and implement improvements that reduce manual work - automation of recurring entries, integrations with upstream systems, and cleaner data at the point of entry.
  • Help evaluate and implement adjacent systems as the finance stack matures.

Audit, Compliance, and Controls

  • Lead preparation for the annual financial statement audit, including PBC schedules, work papers, and auditor requests.
  • Support grant and contract accounting, including cost tracking, allowability, and reporting obligations to institutional and philanthropic funders.
  • Document and strengthen accounting policies and internal controls appropriate to a company at our stage - practical, not bureaucratic.
  • Support sales tax, 1099, and other compliance filings in coordination with outside advisors.

ABOUT YOU:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of month-end close.
  • Hands-on inventory and cost accounting experience at a company that makes a physical product.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including revenue recognition and inventory valuation.
  • Strong ERP experience; NetSuite strongly preferred, or a comparable ERP with the willingness to get deep in NetSuite quickly.
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large data sets drawn from multiple systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize across competing deadlines, and communicate clearly with non-finance colleagues.

YOU MAY THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF:

  • CPA - preferred, but not required. We care more about what you can do than which letters follow your name.
  • Experience at a medical device, life sciences, or other regulated manufacturer.
  • A public accounting foundation combined with industry experience.
  • Exposure to grant or government contract accounting, or to cost principles under federal or philanthropic funding.
  • Experience with multi-entity consolidation, foreign subsidiaries, or multi-currency transactions.
  • Experience supporting a first audit, an ERP implementation, or a close-process overhaul at a growing company.

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL:

  • You are comfortable operating without a large team behind you, and you would rather build a process than inherit one.
  • You go find the answer, instead of booking an entry and moving on.
  • You hold high standards on accuracy while still moving at the pace an early-stage company requires.
  • You explain financial results in terms operators understand and can act on.

BENEFITS:

  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • "Take as much time as you need" policy.
  • Simple IRA plan with employer matching.
  • Company sponsored events and lunches.
  • Yearly stipend for professional development.
  • Opportunity to be part of a dedicated and driven team that is here to disrupt and revolutionize wireless monitoring.
